Can 2014 Be Another Big Year for Black Cinema?

Last year was celebrated as one of the biggest years in black cinema, if not the biggest. Such a year (with films like Fruitvale Station, Lee Daniels' The ButlerMandela: Long Walk To Freedom, and 42) culminated with 12 Years A Slave taking home the Academy Award for Best Picture. And now that 2014 is offically underway, one wonders if we can expect another big year for black films and black directors. Will there be room for more than just one film about the black experience at next year's Oscars?
Well the good news is that there are a number of exciting new projects set for a 2014 release. Fruitvale Station director Ryan Coogler will team up with Michael B. Jordan again for the movie Creed (a quasi-Rockyspinoff), and Spike Lee's highly-anticipated Da Sweet Blood of Jesushas completed filming and is set for a 2014 release. Although Oldboyflopped and his 2012 film Red Hook Summer left much to be desired, many of us still can't resist a good ol' Spike Lee joint.
One film that's also been getting lots of buzz is Justin Simien's feature debut Dear White People. First off, amazing title. And secondly, the film snagged Sundance Film Festival's Special Jury Prize for Breakthrough Talent this year and their trailers and clips pretty hilarious:
Belles is another film we're excited about. The period piece, set in 18th century England, tells the complex story of mix-raced young woman raised in nobility. Amma Asante will direct the movie (her second feature film), inspired by the true story of Dido Elizabeth Belle.
And although there is no release date yet for the new Lee Daniels movie (featuring the first gay action hero, played by Alex Pettyfer), the follow-up project to last year's The Butler has us plenty excited (along with his upcoming Janis Joplin biopic with Amy Adams). This year Daniels will also team up with his Precious lead Gabourey Sidibe again, along with Terrence Howard and Taraji P. Henson for a new FOX television series Empire
Many other directors of color are on the rise this year and it's definitely a good thing. Here's hoping critics and audiences take note and embrace some of these great talents and their upcoming work.

Would you know Oliver Martinez if it wasn't for Unfaithful? Everyone likes to be titillated every once in a while. In the right context, steamy scenes can elevate a story, demonstrate a character, or just plain turn you on.

We’ve collected movies with some of the hottest scenes in movie history. You may have to rewind some of these scenes to be sure they actually happened.

Lady Gaga's 'G.U.Y.' Video Features 'Housewives,'

Lady Gaga premiered a decadent new music video for “G.U.Y.” on Saturday.

Filmed at California’s stunning Hearst Castle, the Ancient Greece-themed clip is filled with celebrity cameos!

The video opens with Gaga being reborn at the castle at a lavish party. Camped around the grounds’ stunning pool are “Real Housewives of Beverly Hills” stars Lisa Vanderpump, Kyle Richards, Kim Richards, Yolanda Foster and Carlton Gebbia, who sing along to Mother Monster’s tune.

MORE PICS of Lady Gaga--

Lisa plays the tambourine, Carlton plucks the harp, Yolanda plays the cello and Kim and Kyle strum acoustic guitars.

The clip goes even further down the Bravo rabbit hole when Andy Cohen’s face appears in the clouds, as the TV host watches the party below.

In an exclusive interview with Access Hollywood earlier this week, Lady Gaga shared details from the shoot with Access guest correspondent Johnny Weir.

“The intention of the video was to create something that was a true sort of road map of my journey, being an artist, a pop singer, a creative person,” she told Johnny, when asked what she hopes people will feel when they watch the video.

Kristen Stewart’s Maroon Skinny Jeans: Get The EXACT Look Here

We barely recognized the ‘Twilight’ star, buried under layers of clothing in a very edgy yet casual look! We know that the star prefers comfort over anything else and she is definitely showing that in her latest outfit. Her trendy, wine-colored skinnies caught our eyes so we tracked them down, just for you. SHOP!

Kristen Stewart, 23, is always rocking an edgy, cool look when it comes to her personal sense of style. On March 19, we caught her walking around NYC in a funky layered get-up as she exited the Bowery Hotel. From the hooded sweatshirt to a flat brim hat, her outfit made her look like a total skater chick! We were feeling K-Stew’s casual look, and found out just where to get her wine-colored super tight, skinny jeans.

Kristen Stewart’s Jeans In NYC For ‘Still Alice’ Filming:

We can never have too many pairs of skinny jeans, so let’s add another funky pair to our collections.  Kristen’s J Brand 485 Luxe Sateen Super Skinny leggings in Pinot for $185 are a fab pair of pants to flaunt any day. Layering is so hot right now and we love how she layered her hoodie and jean jacket over the pants to pull off a very cool look.

The tightness of the leggings gave her more of a feminine feel and balanced out the bagginess of her oversized jean jacket. Skinny’s are the perfect pant to wear for a day of shopping, going to the movies, or just hanging out with friends. Throw on a pair of sneaks like K-Stew did, or wear a low pair of booties to dress up your look and you will totally rock the trendy pants! Traditional denim and blue jeans are a major trend for spring, but Kristen is giving us a fun twist that we’re still loving.

'Scandal': Katie Lowes On #WhoGotShot Theories, Quinn's Future

Katie Lowes on ‘Scandal’

“Scandal” pulled a massive OMG move on last week’s episode (spoilers ahead if you’re not caught up!) as Jake Ballard – now Command of B613 – fired a gun at either David Rosen or James Novak.
Katie Lowes, who plays fallen Gladiator Quinn Perkins on the ABC hit, stopped by Access Hollywood Live on Thursday where she dished on possible theories as to what happened, including the possibility that fans will not have to mourn the loss of James or David come tonight.
“He’s got two [guns]. It is weird,” Katie told Billy Bush and Kit Hoover of Jake’s final scene in the most recent “Scandal” episode, after he shot two women and appeared to shoot either David or James. “It does leave major questions, like why did he use two guns? Is one a silencer? Is one blanks? Is one a warning shot? Does anybody die?”

The actress couldn’t divulge much info, but she did say she’s learned that her plot theories usually turn out to be incorrect.
“All I can say is every single thing I thought was going to happen on this show doesn’t,” she said. “So that’s what I use as my meter now, which is, if you think it’s going to happen, it’s not.”

As for what’s going on with her character, Quinn, Katie said she’s grateful she’s been able to play someone with such an incredible arc.
“From the pilot episode where I would do anything for Olivia Pope and now I’m holding her at gunpoint – it’s like, thank you, Shonda Rimes, and all the writers — I’ve just gone on this incredible journey,” she said, going on to explain why Quinn has been rebelling against Liv and associates as of late. “She is just so angry. Every single time Olivia Pope says, ‘Let me come and help you,’ it’s not a good thing. So in that car scene when Olivia says, ‘Let me help you,’ it’s like, ‘No, no, no, I’m helping myself now. And I have to learn to put boundaries and I have to take up business on my own.’”
“Scandal” airs Thursdays at 10 PM on ABC.

'Divergent': movie review

The trailer for 'Divergent' starring Shailene Woodley.

SUMMIT ENTERTAINMENT

Bland first film in another teen sci-fi trilogy doesn't diverge far enough from the superior 'Hunger Games'

Shailene Woodley and Theo James play members of the Dauntless faction of fighters in the dystopian tale "Divergent."

  • Title: 'Divergent'
  • Trailer: With Shailene Woodley, Kate Winslet, Theo James. Dystopian teen sci-fi doesn’t fly. Director: Neil Burger (2:19).
  • Film Info: PG-13: Violence, language, sensuality. Area theaters.
The “Hunger Games” saga is still going and already we have a successor — another heavily hyped multi-film cycle starring a kick-ass heroine in a dystopian future.
Too bad this would-be heir, “Divergent,” is so unimaginative and desperate to conform.
Big career lift: Shailene Woodley breaks out as an action heroine in "Divergent."

Big career lift: Shailene Woodley breaks out as an action heroine in "Divergent."

Given the recent failure of teen fantasies like “Beautiful Creatures,” “The Host” and “Ender’s Game,” you’d think Hollywood would be more careful about picking franchises.
Instead, we get a version of Veronica Roth’s best-selling YA trilogy that plays out like patched together fan fiction.

The strong female protagonist is Tris (Shailene Woodley), who lives in a futuristic, dystopian Chicago.
For reasons never made sufficiently clear, Tris’ entire society is divided into five Factions, cult-like groups defined by personality traits. There’s Candor (truth-tellers), Amity (gentle souls), Erudite (brainiacs), Dauntless (fighters) and Abnegation (self-sacrificers).

Tris was born into Abnegation, but at a testing ceremony at age 16, she ends up showing qualities of several factions, making her a rare Divergent.

Tris hides her results and chooses to join Dauntless, at which point she and her fellow initiates (including Zoe Kravitz and Miles Teller) have to fight for limited spots in the clan. Luckily for Tris, her feistiness and impressive knife skills catch the eye of a hunky Dauntless trainer called Four (Theo James). But they also attract the attention of the city’s power-hungry leader, Jeanine (Kate Winslet), who wants to wipe out the Divergents.
Director Neil Burger (“Limitless”) and co-writers Evan Daugherty and Vanessa Taylor have streamlined the book, making an already derivative text even more generic. The visual palette is so bland, and the logistical gaps so obvious, that it’s hard to see any personal passion for this project.
Kate Winslet plays a power-hungry leader out to destroy the Divergents.

Kate Winslet plays a power-hungry leader out to destroy the Divergents.

Woodley, already touted by some as “the next Jennifer Lawrence,” is a nicely empathetic center, and the movie picks up whenever she and the suitably swoon-worthy James are together. Unfortunately, it grinds to a halt whenever Winslet’s ill-defined villain shows up, and the plodding action scenes deny the supporting cast (Ashley Judd, Maggie Q, Mekhi Phifer) a chance to stand out.
Successful teen franchises understand the entertainment value of grand gestures. Florid romanticism, cool special effects and garish costumes go a long way toward distracting us from flaws or uncomfortable truths.
In fact, mass distraction is the whole point of “The Hunger Games,” which — despite its excessive sadism — offers a far more convincing metaphorical universe than this mild knockoff.
After nearly two and a half hours, you may still be hard-pressed to understand the point of “Divergent.” Let me save you some time: it’s to grab our cash as quickly as possible, before the Next Big Thing comes along.

The Story

"Based on Veronica Roth's bestselling series, 'Divergent' depicts a future Chicago after a catastrophic global war. Lake Michigan has dried into a vast marsh, an electrified wall encircles the heart of the city to protect it from outside influences, and society is divided into five factions: Amity, Erudite, Candor, Dauntless, and Abnegation. Beatrice 'Tris' Prior (Shailene Woodley) and her brother Caleb (Ansel Elgort) are children of Abnegation, the governing faction that rejects vanity, feeds the Factionless, and lives humbly in bare quarters. Society replenishes itself by submitting children of all factions to a test that determines where they are best suited, then allowing them to pick their place for life in a Choosing Ceremony. But Erudite leader Jeannine Matthews (Kate Winslet) insists that everyone should simply know their place, and that those who deviate from a thoughtless routine threaten to undermine the fragile fabric of rebuilding society. Tris discovers during her test that she's Divergent--special and dangerous to the powers-that-be, because she has more than one dominant personality trait and thus cannot be easily sorted into one of five categories that encompass every duty within society. Uninspired by the drab humility of her parents (Ashley Judd and 'Scandal's' Tony Goldwyn), Tris falls in with the Dauntless, the tattooed soldiers who run everywhere, climb everything, and show no fear." —

Chris Pine Arrested for Drunk Driving in New Zealand

According to local sources, the "Star Trek" and "Jack Ryan" star was stopped after leaving a wrap party for the location shoot of upcoming sci-fi film "Z for Zacharaiah."

Star Trek and Jack Ryan star Chris Pine was recently arrested for drunk driving in New Zealand, where he was shooting upcoming science fiction film Z for Zachariah.According to local sources, the 33-year-old actor was caught driving drunk in the early hours of March 1, after celebrating with other cast members at a wrap party in the New Zealand town of Methven.

Canterbury police confirmed to THR that a 33-year-old American man was stopped during a routine check early on March 1, but would not reveal his identify due to New Zealand privacy laws. Local sources say Pine is due in Ashburton district court on Monday (17 March).
Z for Zachariah is directed by Craig Zobel (Compliance) and also stars 12 Years a Slave's Chiwetel Ejiofor and Margot Robbie from Wolf of Wall Street. The film is about a sixteen-year-old girl who survives a nuclear war in a small American town. It's due out in 2015.
Local paper The New Zealand Herald spoke with the manager of the Blue Pub Methven, where the wrap party was held. According to the outlet, about 70 cast, crew and local volunteers rented the bar to celebrate the conclusion of filming on Feb. 28 with the party ending around 3 a.m. on March 1 -- the morning Pine was arrested.
"Chris Pine arrived here and had his girlfriend [Iris Bjork Johannesdottir] with him and he spent most of his time with her -- she flew in that day someone told me,'' bar manager Casey Crawfordtold the Herald.
Crawford added that there were designated drivers at the party and he was surprised to hear that Pine had driven himself.

Miley Cyrus Performs in Her Underwear After Missing Costume Change

The show must go on! After missing a costume change, Miley Cyrus was forced to perform in her underwear on Sunday, March 9, in Milwaukee, Wis. The 21-year-old singer decided to take the stage half-naked rather than disappoint her fans.
Cyrus took to Twitter after the show to explain the wardrobe malfunction. "Not a new outfit for 23," the "We Can't Stop" singer tweeted. "I didn't make my quick change and I couldn't not come out for the song so I just had to run out in my undies."
The mishap was apparently a first for the former Disney star. "Never happened to me before. But I love my fans as much as they love me!" she tweeted. "I couldn't miss 23. Show must go on."
Cyrus took the stage in a matching red-and-black striped bra and underwear, which isn't much more revealing than her costumes. The "Wrecking Ball" singer typically wears the underwear onstage with a pair of red chaps.
Cyrus' ensembles -- created by Roberto CavalliMarc Jacobs, and Bob Mackie -- have already been making headlines for their skin-baring designs throughout her Bangerz tour

Is Jay Z Skipping Kimye’s Wedding

As Kim Kardashian and Kanye West‘s wedding approaches, new details are emerging about the big day. First up: Jay Z as West’s best man. According to insiders, Jay has not interest in participating in (or even attending) the wedding if it’s going to be filmed for Keeping Up With The Kardashians. The rapper doesn’t want him, Beyonce or Blue Ivy to appear on the E! reality series.
Meanwhile, Jay Z is not the only one making demands. Kardashian is turning into something of a Bridezilla as she finalizes her dress for the most important wedding of her career. The Gossip Table initially reported that Kim would be wearing white, it turns out she settled on a cream color and the dress will a fitted yet subdued. But the decisions haven’t come without the stress. But with the dress and prenup taken care of, she may be able to calm down.
Speaking of prenuptial agreements, over the weekend, Kimye finalized details of their marriage contract. According to RadarOnline.com, Kardashian will get $1 million for every year she stays married to Yeezus. The amount is capped at $10 million. In addition to the yearly stipend, the title of their Bel Air mansion will be in Kardashian’s name, and she gets to keep all the jewelry and gifts given to her by soon-to-be husband.
While West reportedly didn’t think a prenup was necessary, he just needs to check out these most expensive weddings to end in divorce and then maybe he’ll be thankful the additional protection.

'300' sequel rules box office with $45.1M debut

NEW YORK (AP) — The shirtless warriors of the "300" sequel "Rise of an Empire" ravaged the post-Oscars box-office weekend with a domestic debut of $45.1 million but an even bigger international haul of $87.8 million.
Seven years after the original "300" became an unlikely, ultra-stylish, blood-soaked sensation, Warner Bros.' 3-D follow-up showed considerable might at the box office. While "300: Rise of an Empire" didn't come close the North American debut of Zack Snyder's 2007 original ($70.9 million and without the benefit of 3-D ticket prices), it performed like a blockbuster overseas.
"Rise of an Empire," which with flexed torsos and R-rated bloodshed further chronicles the ancient battles of the Greeks and Persians, led a busy box-office weekend that also saw an Academy Awards bump for "12 Years a Slave" and one of the highest per-screen averages ever for Wes Anderson's European caper "The Grand Budapest Hotel."
Though "300: Rise of an Empire" is excessively macho, Eva Green — the film's fiercest presence — may have drawn females for what was always going to be a male-centric release. Whereas the female audience for the first "300" was only 29 percent, it was 38 percent for "Rise of an Empire."
"Talk about female empowerment," said Jeff Goldstein, head of domestic distribution for Warner Bros., said of the "Casino Royale" actress.
Noting the popularity of 3-D and IMAX screenings for the movie, Goldstein credited the visual panache of producer Snyder (Noam Murro took over directing), who drew directly from Frank Miller's graphic novels: "He brings a lot to the screen that mesmerizes you."
Paul Dergarabedian, senior media analyst for box-office tracker Rentrak, said the "300" franchise "translates to virtually every culture. Every country can appreciate the visuals of these movies."
The week's other new wide release, 20th Century Fox's animated "Mr. Peabody & Sherman," opened in second with $32.5 million. Though the performance was better than some expected, it's a relatively low total for a film that cost about $140 million to make.
The film is based on the cartoon about a time-traveling boy and his brilliant dog from "The Rocky and Bullwinkle Show." Some of the family film market was likely taken by Warner Bros.' hit "The Lego Movie," which added $11 million in its fifth weekend.
The Liam Neeson thriller "Non-Stop" slid to third place with $15.4 million in the Universal release's second weekend after topping the box office last week.
In limited release, "The Grand Budapest Hotel" made an astounding average of $200,000 on four screens in New York and Los Angeles. Fox Searchlight will expand the film by 65 to 75 theaters next week.
The specialty studio also celebrated the best picture Oscar win for "12 Years a Slave" with a notable bump of $2.2 million, even though it was released on DVD and video-on-demand Tuesday. That was up 123 percent on the prior weekend for the film, which first opened in November.
"12 Years a Slave" drew even more international interest, where it made $9.1 million as moviegoers flocked to see the Academy Award winner.
